The Rivelin Hotel on Tofts Lane in Stannington has reopened after months of uncertainty, now operating under the name The Rivelin Inn and led by a familiar face in Sheffield's pub scene.
The pub is now in the hands of Matthew Begley, who built a strong reputation at the Walkley Cottage during his four year run there until August 2024. His arrival follows the departure of previous managers Abbie Mullen and her partner Simon, who said in May they were "absolutely gutted" to leave and pointed to a dispute with the owners.
With the change in leadership comes a fresh start. In a Facebook post on 27th November, the team shared that they are looking forward to welcoming "old and new friends alike." The pub's website describes its new direction as "a refreshed country pub experience on the edge of the Peak District," and highlights warm hospitality, good food, and a friendly setting for locals and visitors.
The reopening marks a new chapter for a venue with strong ties to the community, now set to build on Begley's experience and the pub's setting on the edge of Sheffield's countryside.
The Rivelin Hotel, a popular pub on Tofts Lane near Stannington, is closing its doors. Managers Abbie Mullen and her business partner Simon shared the news with "great sadness," saying they are "absolutely gutted" to be leaving.
The closure impacts around 18 staff members and marks the end of what has been a meaningful chapter for the team and the local community. "We are absolutely gutted not only for us but for all our lovely customers and the friends we have made here," Abbie wrote in a public message on Facebook.
She thanked patrons for their support and kind words, noting how much the encouragement has meant to them. "We are so sad to leave," she added, "but also got a fire in our belly for what is to come at our new home."
The Rivelin will host a farewell party on Saturday 31st May starting at 7PM, with a free buffet for guests. The final meals will be served on Sunday 1st June.
Abbie and Simon won't be out of the pub game for long. They're set to reopen the Bulls Head on Fulwood Road in Ranmoor, with opening day planned for Friday 6th June.
