Real ale enthusiasts have crowned The Rising Sun as Sheffield West Pub of the Year 2026, marking the fourth time the popular venue has received the honour.
Members of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) voted for the Fulwood Road pub following its continued popularity among local drinkers. The award adds to an impressive record for the venue, which previously secured Sheffield & District Pub of the Year in 2022 and Sheffield West Pub of the Year titles in both 2023 and 2025.
Owned by Abbeydale Brewery, the pub offers a range of cask ales alongside guest beer rotations, an ever-changing cider selection, a carefully curated wine list, a wide choice of quality spirits, and a variety of non-alcoholic options.
The Rising Sun's history stretches back to 1859, when the original establishment first opened. Research carried out by Dave Pickersgill, a CAMRA member and editor of Sheffield's Real Heritage Pubs, identified its earliest recorded mention in the 1859 General Directory of Sheffield.
The name "Rising Sun" is believed to have been chosen for pubs facing east and catching the morning sunlight - a description that applied to the original building.
The current premises date from 1904, when the pub was rebuilt a short distance away to allow the widening of Fulwood Road for the introduction of electric trams. According to Mr Pickersgill's research, Sheffield Town Trustees agreed to provide land free of charge to Sheffield Corporation in exchange for the demolition and reconstruction of the pub.
During the mid-20th century, the licence was taken over by the Courage Group. In July 1992, management passed to the University of Sheffield Students' Union, before Abbeydale Brewery acquired ownership shortly before Christmas 2005. An extensive refurbishment followed in 2014, including the addition of a full kitchen and a glass-roofed extension.
The latest award from CAMRA reflects sustained support from real ale drinkers, confirming the Rising Sun's continued status as one of Sheffield's most celebrated pubs.
We have updated some information for the Rising Sun Inn at Nether Green thanks to their website. The pub is now owned by Sheffield's Abbeydale Brewery and sells many of their real ales.
Local micro-brewer Abbeydale Brewery has taken over the Rising Sun Inn at Nether Green. The pub will now become a free house and will concentrate on selling real ales, including all of Abbeydale Brewery's range as well as some Kelham Island Brewery beers. Abbeydale Brewery development director, Chris Morton, confirmed that the aim is for the Rising Sun Inn to become a community pub featuring live music. The pub is also completely non-smoking.
The Rising Sun Inn pub at Nether Green has applied to extend its licensing hours until on Fridays, Saturdays and Bank Holidays. It also wants to play music until 12:30AM on those days, but local residents have objected, claiming that they already suffer due to rowdiness at closing time.

Dirty glasses. Flat beer.
What has happened to this fine establishment?
Since the new manager was installed I feel this pub has lost all direction. Its atmosphere is now a flat as the beer.
To be scowled at when questioning said beer was the final straw.
Farewell.

We had a great meal there last night.
Apparently there is a new team of chefs that sound very professional.
We shared a Black Pudding & Chorizo starter that was generous and full of flavours.
This was followed by a Sea Bream and a Rolled Lamb Breast, both of which were excellent.
The staff were helpful & friendly despite it being really busy.
Can't wait to go back as there are lots of other dishes I'd like to try.

The food used to be excellent. Recommended to lots of friends, having regularly eaten there since Abbeydale Brewery taken over.
Three of us had meals last night and the food was disappointing, to say the least. Apparently a new chef. Certainly will not be eating there again.

Great beer, shame about the welcome. Staff unfriendly and landlord intolerant of children even in the "garden". "Seen and not heard" would appear to be his attitude. I won't be visiting again.

An excellent range of beers from the Abbeydale Brewery.
Unfortunately the landlord did not make us feel at all welcome. The pub was generally down at heal and the seating, close to toilets, was unpleasant.

A fantastic range of excellent beers, both from the pump and bottled. Good wines, the best fruit juices and good 'stick to your ribs' home cooked food. Also live music regularly, a relaxed atmosphere and not packed with (gorgeous though they are) young things: what more could a lady of a certain age ask from her local?

A tremendous pub. A huge variety of beautifully kept real ales, an amazing selection of Belgian beers, first-rate food, non-smoking throughout, regular and very good live music, and friendly, helpful staff to top it all. Rapidly and rightly acquiring a great reputation amongst the people who know what makes a proper pub.
