Absolutely cracking pint of Guinness. Best pint of Guinness in Sheffield by far. Staff and locals are very friendly. Would be a shame to pass this hidden gem. Highly recommend.

With the weather being wonderful today we decided to meet some friends to celebrate a birthday at The New Inn.

While there, the kids were playing lovely on the swings. Another child walked in front of the swing and was accidentally knocked (she wasn't hurt in any way), which resulted in me and a friend being approached by a very intimidating intoxicated member of staff who admitted this said child wasn't hers and had been hit by my child! She was informed by my child and other witnesses that it was an accident, yet she proceeded to tell anyone that bothered to listen that there had been a "scuffle" between the children. Yet she hadn't seen anything, as she told me that!

The way this lady approached us was absolutely disgusting and the way she carried it on was disgraceful. If you have members of staff who behave like that and cannot even stand still (because of the bottles of wine they was drinking plus whatever she was topping it up with - yes I could see) when working and condone this behaviour is ridiculous.

Put it this way you have lost very good customers!

Been to this pub today for the first time, and sadly the last.

Nice pint, reasonable prices, and absolutely, I'm sorry, but, terrible bar staff! If you live local and go here regular, then you will be served at once! If, like today, you're new and attend for a one-off 'special event' then avoid!

This was supposed to bring in new custom, but I'm afraid not in my case. Will be seeking more friendly, welcoming, local pubs. Unfortunately I can foresee this establishment going in the same direction as many other pubs.

This pub is run by two of the most welcoming hosts. It is a well-kept pub, beer is great and the two ladies running it always give you a warm welcome. Will definitely be going back.

News for New Inn:

  • A well-known pub in Sheffield has closed temporarily as work begins on a major refurbishment.

The New Inn, on Hollinsend Road in Gleadless, has shut its doors ahead of a £187,000 overhaul being carried out by Heineken-owned Star Pubs. Work on the project began on 16th March.

The refurbishment will include improvements both inside and outside the building. Plans include renovating the exterior of the stone pub and replacing the car park at the front with a south-facing outdoor seating area for 42 people.

Inside, the pub will be redesigned to feature a spacious bar, a snug and an upgraded games room with new furniture and equipment. The games area will include a pool table, two halo-lit dart boards with electronic scoring, and a high-spec surround sound AV system with four screens showing Sky and TNT Sports.

Star Pubs' Sheffield area manager Chris Carratt said the work is intended to modernise the building while keeping it welcoming for the local community.

"The New Inn is a lovely old building but it's tired and needs updating," he said.

"It's been very well supported by the local community, and we're pleased to be improving it for them. It will look fantastic when the works are completed and will be much more warm and welcoming."

The pub will reopen this spring, with the relaunch expected in late April.

When it returns, The New Inn will introduce new opening hours, starting the day three hours earlier at 12pm. Plans are also in place to host a range of regular activities, with different events scheduled throughout the week.

These are expected to include games nights, bingo, a knit and natter club, and Saturday evening entertainment such as karaoke, live singers and open mic events. Baby and toddler "stay and play" sessions and a friendship lunch are also planned.

The refurbishment follows the departure of long-serving managers Nic Barber and Gill Oxley, who left the pub in May 2025 after 14 years at the venue.

When The New Inn reopens, it will be run on behalf of Star Pubs by Sheffield-born Rachel Hancox.

Rachel said: "The New Inn has a great reputation as a popular and friendly local. I'm looking forward to meeting all the regulars and getting involved in the community."

  • The New Inn, a CAMRA award-winning pub in Gleadless, has officially closed following the departure of its long-serving managers.

Nic Barber and Gill Oxley, who had run the Hollinsend Road venue for the past 14 years, announced their exit with a heartfelt message to customers. The pair, known for raising the standard of the pub and earning CAMRA's Real Ale Pub of the Month award during their tenure, said their goodbyes in a Facebook post.

"Just want to say a massive thank you to all our customers for an absolute fantastic 14 years. We've had a blast!" the post read. "Myself and Gill are gutted but there has to be an end game and now is our time. Thank you to all our staff past and present for putting up with us, especially through the hard times! We love you all."

The news sparked a wave of support and appreciation from regulars, many of whom praised the duo for transforming the New Inn into a cornerstone of the local community. One supporter commented, "The New Inn has been a safe and welcoming place while you've been in charge and the standard of the beer has always been excellent. We'll miss you both enormously and wish you the best of luck in your new venture."

The pub, owned by Star Inns, a division of Heineken, had been operated under lease by Barber and Oxley as an independent business. A spokesperson for Star Inns confirmed the pair's departure and outlined the company's intentions going forward.

"They have taken the decision to leave the pub," the spokesperson said. "We are looking to reopen it as quickly as possible and hope to do so within the next few weeks. Longer term, we are looking to recruit an experienced operator for the New Inn."

Prospective operators interested in taking over the New Inn are invited to contact Star Inns' recruitment team at 08085 949596.

The closure marks the end of a significant chapter for the Gleadless pub, but plans are in motion to bring it back to life in the near future.
