Party-goers can hit the town and sip on a choice of drinks, dancing the night away at a bar situated in a 19th-century building
Tried to take 6 students who were doing a presentation for my company in to this pub at 12PM. All were wearing suits as I was. The attitude of the "punk" on the door was a credit to the early rock culture, I was surprised he didn't spit! The girl he was chatting to was more interesting than the 7 clients. He told us to wait 4 hours until he let us in or until it was 12pm by his phone. We humoured him for 4 minutes whilst we stood outside talking.
In the end we went down the road for 7 meals and 7 rounds and had a great time! I as a 50+ customer in smart attire do not expect to be treated as a low life idiot, by a throw back punk with an attitude as backward as the hair cut.
Great way to introduce Sheffield to a visitor and embarrass 6 regulars well done.
- Anthony Bullock,
Things are looking up for the Red Deer.
Andy, from The Cobden View at Crookes will be running the business for Sam & Simon who have moved on to other things, down South.
I am sure the original atmosphere will be re-captured if the Cobden View is anything to go by, where you never get served an off pint, there is always a wide selection of beers. There won't be a chance of the Red Deer running out of beer again if its run like the Cobden.
I am sure we will see changes pretty soon, and I look forward to visiting it again!
- Jacquie,
Food was OK. Manager was helpful, but some of the young staff were rude, unhelpful and surly, and certainly need some training in customer-care! They also need to do a stock-check more often - various condiments, including salt (somewhat basic!), not available when we asked.
Mint ice-cream bombe delivered instead of the ordered chocolate one. Explanation as it was banged down on the table? "That's all we've got".
Will we go again to Rawson Spring? Well, not to eat, anyway. I'd rather try other Wetherspoon's in Sheffield. It's a pity, because the pub is OK, but friendly and helpful staff would make it a much more pleasant venue.
- Bev,
This pub used to be really excellent, with warm friendly lighting, and is still good in terms of the real ales, comfortable settees, wooden panels, and beer garden.
However, recently some changes have been made that are clearly a step in the wrong direction.
When last I visited (2 weeks ago) it had changed in a most unpleasant manner. The lighting was bright and harsh blue-ish white in colour, reminiscent of a police line up.
We did find one snug bit in a corner and sat down, only to find a gigantic TV screen descending onto our heads.
It's such a shame to see a beautiful old-fashioned pub like this being turned into yet another noisy sports pub with tasteless lighting and bright white walls.
I can see that there is a laudable attempt to use low energy lighting, but I would suggest to the owners that they might invest in some lampshades to mute this harsh colour. Fluorescent lighting has no charm at all.
- Andy Rodgerson,
I echo the last comment. I have also been going for years, but lately the beer prices have gone up, and the quality has gone down, and that's when they have any on.
Taylor's Landlord seems a distant memory - its never available, and last Wednesday the pub ran out of beer. Oh dear, Red Deer on the way out.
Well the owners seem to have lost interest so why shouldn't the customers? Reminds one of the lament of the old Hallamshire, the Bee Hive, and Hornblower. All alas no more.
- Mike Nuttall,
After reading about the high recommendation about this pub I decided to give it a whirl.
As for the landlord always smiling, I have never met such a miserable person in my life. As for the place being clean, the place is dirty and cold. The other review says this a small pub with high prices and I must agree - it is very expensive.
The few customers that do go in seem very pleasant but I cannot understand why they keep going in, as the landlord is so ignorant and as soon as he serves you he just wants to sit down and go to sleep. It seems like he does not want customers, so I will oblige him with that by not returning.
- Jane Thorpe,
Had a fantastic evening here on Saturday, March 29th. The food was excellent - we had followed the owners from the Nag's Head where we had a similarly excellent evening a few months before.
Could not have been friendlier - a real pub, not a chain full of people who don't care, but a genuine family affair with the atmosphere you dream of!
Food was excellent - exceptional value (10 of us with desserts came to £70), terrific location, bus stop just opposite so no need to worry about driving.
Thanks guys for a great time!
- Trevor & Vicki,
My one and only experience of this pub was a bad one.
Went for a meal with my partner one Friday afternoon and ordered a rare steak. The food arrived and the steak was well done. The only hint of rareness was a bit on the end that probably hung off the end of the griddle. It was totally cooked through. I sent the steak back, and it was returned to me with a message from the chef that it was indeed rare. Whilst the waitress was there I cut into the steak to show her that it was indeed well done. She took it back to the chef who again returned it saying that it was rare! I sent it back and asked to speak to the manager, who wasn't available. My partner at this stage had to send her food back as it was cold, waiting for mine!
Anyway we decided to leave the pub. At no stage did anyone over us compensatory drinks or an apology. We paid for the drinks and the last thing I saw was my steak being thrown at the kitchen door, accompanied by expletives!
It was an utterly disappointing experience and I believe you would receive better food and service from a vending machine.
- Adey Walkington,
Good place - can usually get a meal at any time in the day up to about 10 or 11PM.
Well done on the interior - log fires, wooden chairs and tables of all shapes and sizes, and no TV or loud music.
Basically this is how an old-fashioned country pub should be
- Andy Rodgerson,
My girlfriend and friends were left disappointed tonight having sent their desserts back to the kitchen because they were not warm enough, only to be given back the same pudding that had been warmed up in the microwave. And the ice cream was like mousse.
