Party-goers can hit the town and sip on a choice of drinks, dancing the night away at a bar situated in a 19th-century building
Called at the Acorn Inn on Thursday 4th Feb 2010 at 6pm for a meal.
We were disappointed to find that when we tried to order a jacket potato we were told that they did not do jacket potatoes in the evening, although there was no mention of this fact on any of the menus or anywhere in the pub.
The food we did have was bland and tasteless, although the young lady serving was polite and courteous.
- Malcolm Bingham,
Best pub in Ecclesfield by far.
Good range of real ales, friendly landlord (even for a Unitedite) and staff. No longer does food. Good live rock music on alternate Fridays.
- R Myers,
Really nice pub, been going weekly for the last year. However, I and everyone of my social group are boycotting over the actions of the rude and ignorant bouncers.
Please do not go, the bouncers are forceful and heavy handed. This is not just a reactionist email. It is disgusting that a great bar has been ruined by the bouncers!
- Adam Coupland,
Excellent food and drink in a very comfortable and pleasant environment. The staff are very friendly and most welcoming. Well done and keep up the good work.
- Jon Robertshaw,
Thursday quiz night is great with free food and a jovial, welcoming atmosphere.
However, with a group of friends, we decided to go there for the Christmas Dinner menu and it was one of the direst eating experiences I have ever had.
We were squashed awkwardly around one rectangular table with a tiny round one adjoining at the end. Portions were small and generally overcooked, arriving at odd intervals so that some people had almost finished their course before others had received theirs. The baked potatoes were grey inside. The Christmas pudding was about 2cm in diameter and 1cm high. People who chose the cheese course were unable to eat it. The paltry selection of 3 cheeses seemed to have been left out for hours and was sweating.
When we came to pay they had no record of the £30 deposit we had prepaid towards the meal making for an awkward end to the evening.
I have such bad vibes about the Robin Hood that I'm not sure I want to attend the quiz nights anymore.
- Roger Brett,
Went for Christmas Day meal - 12 of us at a cost of £400.
We didn't know that turkeys were round in shape, as that 's what we got sliced. It looked like a Bernard Matthews turkey roll!
Also, Aunt Bessie must have worked in the kitchen that day, as the roasties were frozen. Sprouts are not very popular at the best of times but even more so when they are like mush.
Will we be going there again? I don't think so Sonny Jim!
- Julie Emmett,
Good service, great food, kids were welcome. Will go again.
- Danny Watson,
Good value food - most meals are 2 for the price of 1. Generally friendly staff, but sometimes overworked which slows service down (maybe they need to get the staff ratio right).
Decent outside area and enclosed garden. Small car park but it just about copes most of the time (although it does tend to flood, which reduces space).
The pub is always clean, meals are consistently good quality, and appears to have good clientele. Music is nearly always playing but it's never too loud.
I've used the pub for business meals, so I guess you can't get a better recommendation than that.
- William Hayes,
Quality throughout. The new refit has transformed the Cross Scythes at Totley and the new management are doing a fine job creating a great atmosphere in the place.
The food we had was excellent. I can recommend the pork belly with black pudding mashed potatoes. The service was better than most restaurants and overall better value for money than other gastro-pubs around Sheffield. Just what we needed.
- Steven Heaton,
Our party of 9 adults and three children had the Christmas Fayre Sunday lunch and I have to say the 3-course meal was fantastic.
Having had a carvery there previously, which has always been to the usual carvery standard, the starter and desert made this excellent value for money at only £8.50 per head, and free for under 5s.
The food was hot where it should have been, and portions very large. The staff were very polite and helpful and I would have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone. We had a lovely relaxed meal and didn't feel any stress when the children felt the need to walk around a little. Many thanks to all.
