I called in to this pub one afternoon. I was the only person in the meals section. After standing at the bar where you order meals for 7 minutes I asked the barman if anyone was taking orders. He replied "I suppose so". After waiting a further 4 minutes I asked him if he could recommend a pub nearby that had better service, meals and treat customers better. He gave me directions to another pub.
He was spot on. Had a great meal and great service at the Mossbrook just down the road.
- George Lawrence,
Visited the pub last night as the designated driver. Asked for a pint of shandy. I watched in disbelief as the bar person filled a pint glass 75% full of lemonade and then had the cheek to top it up with approximately 20% of beer. Is this the modern day equivalent of watering the beer down to make it go further?
No wonder the pub was empty at 9:30PM. If they are doing this with a shandy what are doing with the rest of the beer?
When I used to work behind the bar a pint of shandy was 50/50 and still tasted like a pint of beer, not a pint of p***.
- Carl Bradwell,
Best pub in Sheffield, sorry we cannot get as much as we would like.
Well done Mandy and Chris.
Our regards,

- Liz and John Whittaker,
Came up from Nottingham for the weekend and found this fantastic pub. Great atmosphere, best bar staff I have ever come across.
Plenty going on and ace loud music. Traditional pub. Definitely a pub for the ageing rockers who still have it. Not a teeny boppers pub!
- Samantha West,
This is the best pub in Sheffield. Great pint, great landlord and bar staff and the people who go in there are the best people in the world.
The atmosphere is very welcoming and friendly and there is never any trouble. As a girl I can go in there on my own and would feel safe and welcomed. Everyone should try it.
- Jane Steele,
Look out for Carnival Day July 9th. We're hoping for as good a turn out as last year.
- Shaun & John (landlords),
We have visited the Castle on many occasions, the food is great we have never had a bad meal. The staff are very friendly, especially the manager. Well worth a visit.
- Gaynor,
Hi all the customers at the Crown & Glove. The C&G has now got the best beer in the village, so customers say. Forget about all the jealous types who would like it for their own. The landlord is not always drunk but is trying to buy it as a free house. Watch this space.
- Shaun (landlord of the Crown & Glove),
I have recently visited the Crown & Glove at Stannington for the first time in a number of years and was totally shocked by the change to this once lovely pub.
As you walk in you are immediately confronted by the smell of the pub's dogs, followed by the dogs themselves. The landlord was totally drunk and using very offensive language. I talked to one or two of the locals about this and apparently it is a common occurrence. Also one of the dogs urinated on the seating.
It is such a shame this once lovely pub has descended to this level. I for one will not be returning until the present landlord has departed!
- William Roberts,
If it's just a drink you want, give this pub a miss. I was in Sheffield from Monday April 4th to the 7th and I did seven pubs in the Good Beer Guide, mostly at lunch time and some again in the evening.
No problem in getting served except in here (about 1:25PM). Nobody behind the bar, some young woman rushing around with food orders, saying to me "I'll be with you in a minute." I didn't wait, went to the Old House instead.
It was busy but I was served straight away. If the owners or whoever can't manage things better they don't deserve to be in the Good Beer Guide. The bar should all ways be attended to. Better buck themselves up for the members weekend!
