Myself and 2 family members have been going into this public house for quite a while for Sunday lunch and enjoyed it until the 17th December 2013. We went for Christmas dinner. It was very poor portions, very small to say we had ordered big meals. Sweets were morsels. So we thought the chef was having an off day and went back the Sunday after - the 22nd December 2013.
The food was utterly disgusting, the only good thing was the beef. Yorkshire pudding and all the vegetables were rock hard, gravy was full of greasy fat. The only thing was the young lady serving behind the bar who was very efficient and helpful and a very hard working lady.
We will not be going back. Who did cooking gave us the impression their heart wasn't in it. Won't be back.
Do not eat here. We booked a month in advance to have our annual Christmas lunch after a morning walk. We queued at the bar to be served by the only barman.
We had booked for between 1PM and 1:30PM. The last of us got their main course at 3:40PM. They had fish and chips, or rather fish and batter. They complained.
My steak tasted as though it had been tenderised and cooked the night before. It was served with cold chips and frozen onion rings. Nothing else. It cost £10. It was advertised as rump steak served with seasonal vegetables.
Those of us having turkey were lucky. They got served first. The vegetables were cold and the turkey was dry and crumbly.
The vegetables ran out before the salmon meals were served and it was cold.
We complained. The landlady would not reduce the cost of these poor meals. She made the excuse that they were under new management, that it was her first week and the that the chef was new. Someone with no apology was given and there was no offer of compensation. We asked for an address to write to but the landlady was unable to provide a true one.
We reluctantly paid and left without our puddings. It was by then nearly tea time anyway.
What a disappointing and dire experience. Poor service, bad, cold and expensive food.
This has just a big relaunch with a new head chef coming in. They are now doing a lunchtime menu at two meals for £5. Good value for money, decent portion size and nice food. They have also just launched a new evening menu, which I have found to be extremely nice food, good portion size and very good value for money.
Enjoyed a great carvery on Sunday, (celebrating my sister's birthday). It's our second visit since The Plough changed hands and was refurbished.
On both occasions, the food & drink were excellent, but my only complaint is the incessant music playing all the time. It was also too loud and we had to shout to hold a normal conversation. A member of staff was visibly shaken when I asked him to turn down the volume. I suspect that the music, (current pop), is actually for the benefit of the mainly youthful staff, and not to please the customers.
Great food, great beer, great staff, great service, but the music was very annoying.
We have owned a house close to the Crown for over 2 years, but only found this great pub yesterday.
When I first enquired about booking I was greeted by a very friendly landlord. We had family here for the weekend and booked for Sunday lunchtime.
When I first arrived I felt immediately that this was going to be an enjoyable experience, and I found that I was right. The landlord and his wife run a friendly place with excellent food and service. We were all well impressed.
At the end of the meal I knew that we had found our new local, and I am sure they will see a lot more of us.
I lived in Leeds for twenty years, and was very lucky to have a regular pub and restaurant there that I really thought would be very difficult to match. I am pleased to say that The Crown is a very suitable replacement.
An earlier-in-the-week visit just for a drink with a couple of family members prompted me to book Sunday lunch for my Mum and me.
The staff were very friendly and the food was quite good with one exception. The roast potatoes could have been used as ammunition for a cannon. Three separate tables complained about them. The pub wasn't busy but the service was slow. We cancelled the pudding as we had long since drunk the coffee, which arrived promptly. We paid and left.
