Went for lunch with my husband and two friends today. We had the sharing platter for starters, which was really nice.
My main course was gammon steak with egg, chips, and peas. No mention of egg or pineapple, which is usually on lots of other menus. I cannot eat eggs so the steak was served to the table with the chips, no peas.
By now the waitress was serving another table (forgot all about my peas) so I had to stop her and ask her for them.
The gammon steak was very small and rather fatty. It would have been more palatable with a slice of pineapple.
Selling what should be low-priced local beer (Bradfield Blonde) for £3.20 a pint, yet not noticing that it's noticeably "off" is not the way to entice customers to have a meal - especially when nobody had thought to put the heating on, a band sound-check in effect put the actual restaurant room out of bounds, and the flimsy single-sheet menu indicated that it was substantially over a tenner for so little as a burger.
For the manageress, or whoever she was, to respond deeply patronisingly and sarcastically when I mentioned that it was a poor pint - when I had courteously avoided boldly stating that it was "off" (or contaminated with cleaning fluid?) - rather took the biscuit.
Five of us went here for Christmas Dinner 2014. There were two elderly people with us in their 80s.
The Christmas dinner was really nice, moist turkey, crusty/soft roast potatoes etc... Staff friendly.
The only complaint was that whilst we were eating our Christmas pudding, a member of staff came over and asked us to hurry up and finish, as there was another group of people waiting for our table. This group of people were pointed out to us and they were sitting close to our table and constantly looking at us as if to say "hurry up".
The elderly gentleman at our table struggled to finish his pudding and eventually had to leave it, as he felt pressured. This meant we had to leave the table without receiving the promised final course of coffee and truffles, which was all a part of the Christmas meal deal we had booked for. The hurried finish to the end of the meal prevented us from chatting and rounding up our meal in a pleasant Christmassy way. There was no apology for this from staff.
When we went to settle our bill it was still not mentioned and, had it not been for one of our group mentioning that we had not received our coffee and truffles, we would have been charged full price.
I had planned to book there again next Christmas because it is a convenient location for friends and family, but this will not be happening now.
Just moved into the area and naturally tried the local. Tried the food on two different visits and was very disappointed.
The first meal was dry and tasted like it had been plated up for a long time, then put in a microwave.
The second was a sirloin steak. I could not cut 50% of the meat even with the steak knife. When I complained, the disinterested lady cook argued about the quality and asked me what I wanted - desert for free was the only option - but no money back.
The tables are left dirty after people have left - food waste, paper waste etc... Staff walk around aimlessly collecting glasses, but no table cleaning. Badly managed pub.
