Just called for a drink Monday evening, which we got after a lengthy wait. At one point there were five of us at the bar waiting, only one bar staff on, and while she changed a barrel, another two customers arrived. Service was poor for a pub of this size, especially as there were a lot of eating customers. Not sure about going again.
Dreadful, inedible meals. Had to go home and cook a meal! The waitress didn't even comment on the fact that we hadn't eaten it so I guess it's a common occurrence. My fish looked as if it had been recooked 3 times at least, and there was nothing inside the scampi! Couldn't even eat the chips! Bad, bad place.
Really welcoming, great pub, with excellent ambience. Actually owned by the local Stancill Brewery, so it always has the full range of their cask beers, properly kept -- the ginger being my fave; the blonde being a great staple -- and nice & cheap (£2.50 across the board).
I rang yesterday lunchtime to ask if the monthly folk club was on that night, to be answered by a super-friendly manageress (Ashley) who said she'd ring the guy who runs the club, and then she rang me back. Now that's service. So I turned up to a candle-lit lovely atmosphere and a great night all round.
Chatting to Ashley, it turns out she used to be a nurse, so she's sort-of transferred her "caring" skills to make a top job of running a pub -- this one only for the past six months, since Stancill took it on.
I'll be going every month to the folk club; shame it isn't on my doorstep to be my local.
Terrible place... dirty little pub. Toilets smell and bar staff would rather chat to "friends" than serve other members of the public! It's like they have no idea of running a pub. Better suited to a B&B - less customer contact required.
Went with a party of 36 to The Peacock at lunchtime. It was apparent that extensive redecoration had taken place recently. The atmosphere was excellent, as was the food. Service could not have been better. The food was hot. Service continued at a good pace so no one was left waiting. This continued through all courses the waitress and waiter were polite and could not have been more helpful.
No one in our party had a bad word to say about the food or service.
Just had lunch of fish, chips and peas. Nothing good to say about the meal. Worst pub food I have ever had. Chips, although home made, were under-done and tasteless. Chips should be crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Fish not fresh but frozen. Golden batter was very dark brown, not golden, and stodgy inside. Don't know what the fish was but I am sure it wasn't cod or haddock. Peas - very small portion of cold mushy peas. Portion size of the meal was that of a child's meal, which, considering the quality of the food, that was more than enough.
Assume staff must be aware of how awful the food was, as not once was either my husband or I asked if everything was OK.
