Review A Pub

I visited Flares on Friday 14/4/06. The group of us on a well-behaved stag night consisted of gents up to the age of 60. We arrived at Flares just before they started charging to enter, which obviously upset them from their manner towards us as we entered the venue.
After approximately 1 hour, one of the older gents received a call from his wife and could not hear so went to the entrance away from the noise. While talking to his wife he stepped outside so as not to block the doorway. When he finished his call he was refused entry back into the club unless he paid four pounds.
He rang us inside and we approached the doorman to explain he had been in for an hour. The doorman was very arrogant and did not want to listen to what we where saying. We asked to speak to the manager but he refused. When we persisted he said he was the manager. I approached another member of staff and again asked for a manager. When asked why, I explained and was told it was policy that if you step outside you must pay to get back in. I continued to ask for a supervisor or manager but was refused every time.
This venue has no signs on its walls telling customers of this rule and its staff where very unhelpful and arrogant and would not listen to reason. I shall take this further and will not give this club my money in the future.
This gentleman who is not a regular visitor into the city centre was upset by the whole matter and it did spoil our night out. We will never visit again, that's a promise.

A relaxed and friendly pub hidden behind Somerfield in Broomhill. A pleasant mix of students and locals make this a place to come and relax or gather with your mates.
Two meals for £5.50 and an extensive menu make it one of the best places to eat in the area at lunch or teatime.
Two pool tables, big screens, quiz on Sundays all add to the entertainment value and the prices are cheap with a pint from £1.75. Discounts on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7PM add to the appeal.
With a large area available to reserve free of charge it is also an ideal venue for meetings or socials.

Taken from an article written by Heather Lindley published in Sheffield CAMRA's "Beer Matters" magazine.
The Silver Fox is a large pub set back from the main Manchester Road (B6088) on the western outskirts of Stocksbridge. It derives its name from the local steel works and was built in 1964. It has two large bars with a full-sized pool table, jukebox, self-contained disco and dance floor in the lounge. The smaller bar known locally as the "Posh Side" allows you to get away from the many activities which are held daily and just visit the Fox for a quite drink. John and Sandra, the landlord and landlady, took over its running two years ago and have gradually introduced a varied and interesting range of cask beers to supplement the standard provisions of eight standard beers and lagers. The local clientele have taken to these developments, partly as a result of the support of local CAMRA subversive activists. (John's right arm goes automatically into a half-Nelson when a certain Membership Secretary now enters).
Since John introduced cask ales, there has been a lively interest from both regulars and new customers. He is keen to promote real ale drinking and fully supports CAMRA's aims. The bar staff are happy to offer taster glasses of guest beers on request. Since the introduction of cask ales just over a year ago John now regularly offers two choices that change weekly. In the past these have included Batemans XD, the full Theakston range, Marston's Pedigree, The Rev James, Spitfire, and Old Tom to name but a few. For December, John has enlisted the help of Thornbridge Brewery, with their award winning Jaipur going on offer.
John and Sandra create a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and promote events for the regulars and visitors every evening of the week. They have recently held their annual fundraising events for NABD, the Disabled Bikers charity raising over £1,450. The more adventurous events include the twice-yearly "Western Weekend" where the whole pub is decorated and given over to the Western theme. Live bands are a main feature of the Silver Fox, with groups such as Frank White, Hummingbirds, Stormbringer, Vamp, Motus, Steve French Band, Blitz and Boogachawooga all gracing the excellent stage on Friday and Saturday nights and getting the dance floor buzzing. I particularly like the Silver Fox because it is so unusual today to find a real ale pub with regular (free) live blues and rock bands and a reasonably sized dance floor to boogie the night away. It also makes an excellent venue to hire for parties, meetings etc...
At quieter times customers can relax over the homemade food served daily at lunch and evening times. The Silver Fox is a real part of the local community and offers a friendly welcome to new and old visitors alike.
The Silver Fox can easily be reached on buses 57 and 58, which run at half-hourly intervals from the Sheffield Interchange. When you enter Stocksbridge just ask the driver for the Fox he will drop you right outside.

Just to agree with Karen Jordan - Casbah is ridiculously expensive, not only to get in but also the drinks. What a shame, that the place could be really cool. Damn the owners!

Located on Penistone Road next to Owlerton stadium, it is very easy to get to on local transport etc... I recommend the pop quiz on Thursday nights, it is music right across the 'pop spectrum', free to play and £12.00 to the winner! There is also "Alan's play your cards right" afterwards, the winner took home nearly £500 the other week.

Having recently heard about a change of management, myself and the missus went to pay a visit to the Garden. Having been to the pub when it was the Ash Tree, we were more than surprised to see the transformation. Under new management, the pub has undergone a serious refurbishment, transforming the pub from a run down boozer to a high-class bar and restaurant.
The decor is ultra modern and warm at the same time - sumptuous leather seating complemented with modern dark wood tables. The bar has been transformed into an array of speciality beers and classic wines. Well-presented staff compliment the image that the new owners are trying to achieve.
The food menu looks delightful and should not be confused with any old pub menu. A wide range of starters and main meals are available along with a Sunday specials board. Every Saturday since it has opened has been booked out, according to the manager who is always seen behind the bar.
A final comment is that the pub is Dronfield's first 100% smoke-free bar, which is a breath of fresh air in light of changing laws. I had to drive from Sheffield to see this place, and will be doing so often from now on.

A great selection of local beers, very good w/c (sad I know but you have to look at both ends) Good food nights! But the Friday / Saturday night female bar staff - WOW!

The selection of local and continental brews is amazing. A good non-smoking room. BEWARE - don't stay too long, you wont find the door out.

I went to the Casbah on Friday evening and the ladies loos were flooded, we had to paddle our way through. They shouldn't be like that, especially when it cost £3 for a vodka and Coke. There was so much broken glass all over the floor as well upstairs and down, it wasn't like that the last time I went about a year ago.

This suburban pub serves a healthy mixture of locals and passing visitors, old and young, the intelligentsia and the intellectually challenged. It's what a public house should be - open to all. The ales, lagers, wines, spirits and soft drinks are all fairly priced and well-kept in comparison with other establishments. The lunch menu is tasty and reasonably priced. There are popular quiz nights on Sundays and Tuesdays and the Banner's own football team is legendary. The landlord team - Janet and Roger - run a tight ship with a supportive staff - including head barman the dashing Les. This is what you call a proper pub and long may it prosper.
