Brewers to celebrate Steel City win at awards night With the Baftas and the Brits over and done with, we at Sheffield CAMRA are now looking forward to a much more exciting awards night - The Steel City Beer awards! All the beers at Sheffield's Steel City Beer Festival last September were judged by a blind tasting panel comprising tasting trained CAMRA members and guests from the pub and brewing world, all who know about what good beer should taste, smell and look like, and selected winners in each category of beer as well as an overall winner. On Friday 9th March, the committee of the Sheffield & District Campaign for Real Ale, led by chairman Dave Williams and assisted by festival organiser Myk Eccles, will be up on stage at Thornbridge Hall's Carriage House venue to present the certificates to the winning brewers in front of an audience of nearly 100 beer lovers. For those buying tickets to attend this event, a good night out is assured - all the breweries will be bringing a cask of their winning beers with them and they will be flowing freely all night, and a buffet supper is also laid on. There are still a few tickets left, priced at just £12.50 each including coach transport to the venue from Sheffield City Centre, these are available from Sheffield CAMRA's social secretary Richard Ryan on 07956 114926. The winning beers: Overall winner: Black Mass (Abbeydale Brewery, Sheffield) Category winner - Bitter: JHB (Oakham Brewery, Peterborough) Category winner - Best Bitter: Wrens Nest (Howard Town Brewery, Glossop) Category winner - Strong Bitters and Old Ales: Kipling (Thornbridge Brewery, Derbyshire) Category winner - Mild: Ruby Mild (Rudgate Brewery, Category winner - Stouts and Porters: Black Mass (Abbeydale Brewery, Sheffield)
